Fodder Trees and Shrubs in Arid and Semi-arid Livestock Production Systems
نویسندگان
چکیده
Arid and semi-arid lands constitute a large proportion of available agricultural and rangeland in the world. These lands are characterised by low and unreliable rainfall, low land productivity, and low socioeconomic status of the inhabitants. Livestock plays a very significant role in their economies. Leguminous trees and shrubs, which dominate the natural rangelands, are often higher in crude protein and other nutrients and play a vital role as dietary supplements to the low quality grasses in the dry seasons. In addition to the fodder potential, the role of tree legumes in the sustainability of agricultural and pastoral production systems is increasingly being recognised and explored. This role and importance of legume trees for livestock production, their nutritional quality and factors which limit their use in livestock production are reviewed. Fodder tree and shrub integration into agricultural and pasture production systems is emphasised. Identified constraints to effective use are highlighted and the needs for increased research and development are discussed.

Genus Salsola: Its Benefits, Uses, Environmental Perspectives and Future Aspects - a Review
Genus Salsola, a genus of annual semi-dwarf to dwarf shrubs and woody tree species, is widely distributed across the arid and semi-arid areas of the world. Several features like high fodder value, abundant seed production, tolerance to extreme climatic conditions like high temperature and prolonged drought conditions contributed significantly towards its success as a potential forage species in...
متن کاملFodder Crop Production for Conservation as Winter Feed and Technology Transfer from Pakistan to N.w. China and North Vietnam
Livestock production by transhumance rearing systems is the major land use and a source of livelihood in most areas of the arid, semiarid, and arid temperate agro-ecological zones of Asia. It is perhaps the best way of exploiting these pastures economically. Lack of feed is the major constraint to improving livestock production during winter and early spring, as the temperatures are extremely l...
متن کاملRangeland management and animal production sustainability under arid and semi arid conditions: Egypt overview
Livestock fodder needs in nearly all developing countries now exceed the sustainable yield of rangelands and other forage resources. In Africa, overgrazing has reduced range productivity virtually everywhere. It is important to provide animals with adequate nutrition to ensure the high productive and reproductive performance. Meanwhile, it is necessary to avoid the deterioration of the pasturel...

متن کاملHigh Spatial Resolution Visual Band Imagery Outperforms Medium Resolution Spectral Imagery for Ecosystem Assessment in the Semi-Arid Brazilian Sertão
Semi-arid ecosystems play a key role in global agricultural production, seasonal carbon cycle dynamics, and longer-run climate change. Because semi-arid landscapes are heterogeneous and often sparsely vegetated, repeated and large-scale ecosystem assessments of these regions have to date been impossible. Here, we assess the potential of high-spatial resolution visible band imagery for semi-arid...
